Classification Of BOPP (Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene) Films

The BOPP film is made of a mono-oriented polypropylene film base which has been transversely embossed and coated with polyethylene. The term ‘biaxially’ refers to stretching both lengthwise and across its width (from selvedge to selvedge). This causes it to have extra strength (tear resistance) as well as shrink or expand in only one direction, unlike a normal polypropylene film which can easily tear by tearing along its width. In Europe, BOPP film is referred to as Coextrusion Multilayer Film (CML).

CMLs come in various thicknesses and construction types, including Layered Construction CMLs: These CMLs consist of two or more layers. One layer is usually low-density polyethylene which gives the film its softness and flexibility. Another layer may be high density polyethylene for added strength; most often this will be on the outside surface. Most CMLs use at least three layers – two LDPE exterior layers separated by an HDPE core layer. Transparent PVC Coatings on the inside surface may also be used to give further protection against corrosion.

Manufacturing Processes Involved In BOPP Film Manufacturing

BOPP films are manufactured using an extrusion process. First, polypropylene resin is melted and fed into a hopper where it is conveyed through an extruder to form thin polyolefin filaments. The molten polymer is extruded through a fine-pored spinneret into coagulating bath maintained at 55°C – 85°C to form a continuous film (fibres). Upon withdrawal from a bath, fibres must be stretched uniformly to eliminate microscopic irregularities that could otherwise cause spots and defects in the final product after orientation by stretching equipment. At one end of the drum, a small orifice (for applicator) is provided which coats each fibre with solid carbon black pigment.
