Types of Fireplaces

Fireplaces are the proverbial heart of the home. It’s the place where people gather around on chilly evenings to spend time with their loved ones.

Over 40% of single-family homes built in 2018 had at least one fireplace in them. People strive to create a warm and welcoming environment in their homes, and fireplaces add to this atmosphere.

These days there are various types of fireplaces to choose from if you’re thinking of adding one to your home. Each type has its own pros and cons, so picking one will depend on your personal preferences.

So keep reading to find out more about the different types of fireplaces and how to pick the right one for your lifestyle.

Wood-Burning Fireplaces

This is the classic fireplace you always see in Christmas movies. These traditional fireplaces give you a multi-sensory experience as you get to experience not just the heat but also the sound and smell of wood fire. The crackling fire is the perfect soundtrack to end a night with.

Larger fireplaces might need to be cleaned regularly to get rid of any buildup and residue from the wood.

Gas Fireplaces

Gas fireplaces are an inexpensive alternative to wood-burning fireplaces. The look and feel of these fireplaces are extremely similar to traditional wood fireplaces, just without the added costs.

Since gas fireplaces can easily be turned on and off, you can create a statement piece with your fireplace. Commercial fireplace designers can even create beautiful works of art that incorporate these fireplaces.

Gas fireplaces also don’t need to be built into your home. Freestanding models are a great space-saving option and allow you to move them around as needed.

The only drawback of these fireplaces is that you need a gas line.

Electric Fireplaces

These flameless fireplaces simply plug into a socket to work. This means you can have a fireplace in every room that has access to a wall socket.

These fireplaces use coils and a fan to distribute heat evenly across the room. To add to the ambiance, most of these fireplaces have a fake flickering flame to replicate the look and feel of a traditional fireplace.

These fireplaces produce the least amount of heat out of all the different fireplace options. They are more suited to warmer climates that don’t experience harsh winters as the fireplace is more there to break the chill in the air.

These heaters are meant to keep running for long periods of time as they slowly heat the air in the room. Unlike traditional fireplaces, they won’t heat your whole home.

The Different Types of Fireplaces Explained

When it comes to picking between the different types of fireplaces, you need to assess your needs and lifestyle. Whether you’re designing a fireplace from scratch or simply utilizing the space you have in your home, you won’t regret your fireplace installation. Soon your fireplace will become the central point in your home.
