Overview:
The vehicles that have historically best embodied the spirit of the BMW brand have been sports sedans. not as much any longer. With a satisfying balance of refinement and driver engagement, the 2023 X3 SUV approaches the territory of its four-door brethren. The X3 is, as its name suggests, the 3-series sedan’s crossover counterpart, and the two vehicles’ powertrains are compatible. The company’s venerable 382-hp turbo six, which never ceases to astound us with its velvety muscle, boosts M40i models while entry-level models are powered by a 248-hp turbo-four. The X3 has a stylish exterior that gives it enough curb appeal to compete with other high-end vehicles like the Genesis GV70 and Volvo XC60. The X3’s roomy interior is tastefully designed and equipped with high-end materials and cutting-edge technology. However, it’s the X3’s sporty handling that appeals to enthusiast drivers like those on our staff the most. As an added bonus, its athletic road manners don’t compromise either its genteel nature when cruising or its general SUV practicality.
For 2023, what’s new?
The 2023 X3 doesn’t undergo many changes after receiving a minor styling update last year. The iDrive infotainment system’s gesture controls are no longer part of the optional Premium package, and remote proximity keyless entry is now a standard feature across the entire lineup. The four-cylinder 30i models now come in Skyscraper Grey Metallic paint.
performance, transmission, and engine
The rear-wheel-drive sDrive30i and all-wheel-drive xDrive30i have a 248-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder under the hood, which gives them enough power to easily maneuver through almost any traffic situation but isn’t particularly thrilling. We haven’t tested a sDrive30i model, but the xDrive 30i needed 6.2 seconds to reach 60 mph on our test track. In our tests, the Audi Q5 and the Porsche Macan S are both faster—the Porsche by a significant margin. The X3 M40i will be much more appealing to those looking for a performance-focused crossover. Our testing revealed a 4.1-second zero-to-60-mph time from the car’s powerful 382-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six cylinder engine, which offers almost brutish power. The X3 is enjoyable to drive and willing to arc around corners better than expected, though it doesn’t quite offer Macan levels of athleticism. It actually feels more capable than some of BMW’s current sedans. With just the right amount of firmness for a sporty feel without making the ride uncomfortable over uneven road surfaces, the ride quality is well-balanced. The adaptive suspension was a feature of our test car that we highly recommend. It’s called Dynamic Damper Control, and it gives the xDrive30i access to Comfort, Sport, and Eco Pro driving modes. On the M40i, an adaptive M suspension is an option that lowers the chassis by 0.4 inches.
