Create a notepad and designate a page for each staple purchase. Then, keep a record of your purchases, noting the quantity, price, and storefront each time. You may calculate the cost per ounce or gram by dividing the total cost by the number of units you purchased.
If you bought toilet paper, for instance, write down the store, the price, and the number of rolls you got. The unit price is calculated by dividing the entire cost by the quantity purchased; for example, if you spent $10 on 20 rolls, dividing that total by 20 gives you a unit price of $0.50 per roll.
Then, the next time you need to buy something, check your wallet before you enter the store. If the price is the same or lower than you remember it being, it’s a good deal. Be careful to update the record for the most recent purchase, noting the total amount spent, the number of items acquired, and the Indian grocery store at which they were acquired.
Consider whether or not the increased cost is justified before making a purchase. You shouldn’t wait until you’re out of something before buying more of it, and if it’s too expensive, you might want to wait some more.
The key, in a nutshell, is to maintain a record of your purchases and the amounts you paid. You can then use this information to see if the item you wish to buy is available at a fair price.
