Never Smoked But Have Lung Cancer? Here’s Why It’s Happening

Never Smoked But Have Lung Cancer Here’s Why It’s Happening

When you hear someone is diagnosed with lung cancer, most of the time, people will assume it is a middle-aged man who’s been smoking for quite a while now. Well, it is true, but in recent decades, the rate of lung cancer among never-smokers has risen dramatically.

According to a 2023 study published in the National Review of Clinical Oncology, lung cancer in non-smokers is considered the fifth most common cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide.

But, how do these non-smokers get lung cancer?

Why do non-smokers develop lung cancer?

Many people associate lung cancer with cigarette smoking, making it the greatest risk factor for the disease. However, there is one in five people who are recorded to die of lung cancer but have never smoked in their entire lives.

To shed light on the confusing question of how someone can get lung cancer without smoking, here are the other risk factors that can contribute to an increased risk of the cancer:

  • Radon gas: It is an invisible and odorless gas that’s released from the soil and can enter your home through the foundation. When you breathe a high amount of radon, it can increase your risk of lung cancer.
  • Air pollution: Inhaling high amounts of car fumes, toxic gases from factories, and other pollutants can damage the lungs.
  • Secondhand smoke: When you inhale smoke from other people’s cigarettes, that is considered secondhand smoke and is the leading cause of lung cancer for non-smokers. The best example of this is those people who grew up with a smoker in their family.
  • Family history: For those who have a family member who never smoked but developed the disease before the age of 50, have a greater risk

Signs of Lung Cancer in Non-Smokers

The symptoms of lung cancer in non-smokers are almost the same in smokers. Most of the signs and symptoms are often assumed to be from other conditions, making them seek treatment, until the condition gets worse.

You should be aware of the signs and symptoms of lung cancer, especially if you have a family history of the disease:

  • Fatigue
  • Chest pain
  • Wheezing
  • Hoarseness
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Loss of appetite
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • A persistent cough that worsens over time
  • Swelling of the face or neck

How To Prevent Lung Cancer If You Don’t Smoke

Lung cancer can be very crucial because it can affect smokers, non-smokers, and former smokers. To reduce the risk of others in your family who don’t smoke, take note of the following:

  • Avoid public spaces where smoking is allowed.
  • Always bring a facemask or a handkerchief whenever you pass by or go near a smoking area or a place where there’s a lot of smoke.
  • Never allow smoking inside your home or car.
  • Get a radon home test available.

Dialysis vs. Kidney Transplant: Which Is the Better Option?

Dialysis vs. Kidney Transplant Which Is the Better Option

There are a lot of causes why your kidney may no longer work effectively, resulting in kidney failure or end stage renal disease. These causes are often from diabetes, high blood pressure, or any hereditary conditions that can spread to other body parts. So, you need to understand your options for treatment, whether you will do it with a transplant or a dialysis.

What is a Kidney Transplant?

A kidney transplant is considered as another treatment option for kidney failures, wherein it will require a medical operation. The person receiving the kidney—donor, and the person giving the kidney is the donor. Donors can be relatives, partners, or close friends. There are also transplants received from deceased donors with a permission for their organs to be donated after their death.

The survival rate of a kidney transplant is approximately 97% of recipients from deceased donors being alive at one year, and 90% being alive at five years. The survival rate from a living donor is considered higher, with 99% at one year and 96% at five years.

Factors that affect the suitability for a transplant:

  • General good physical health, apart from having kidney failure.
  • Willingness to go through with tests and operation.
  • Desire to take lifelong anti-rejection medication.
  • Agreement between the idea of transplantation and acceptance of the risks involved.
  • In the early weeks of transplant, you may experience several acute rejections.

What is Kidney Dialysis?

Dialysis is a treatment wherein it removes waste and extra fluid from the blood when the kidneys aren’t working properly. A healthy kidney removes fluid and waste 24 hours a day, but for dialysis it can only do 10-15% of what a normal kidney does.

Kidney transplantation offers a more complete solution, dialysis is considered a short-term treatment for patients. This kind of treatment is much suitable for people with acute kidney failure who may just need dialysis until their kidney function improves.

Types of Kidney Dialysis

Peritoneal dialysis

A peritoneal dialysis works when a soft plastic tube called a catheter is placed in your belly by a surgeon and a sterile cleansing fluid is put into your belly through the catheter. The filtering process works and finishes when the fluid leaves your body through the inserted catheter. There are two main types of peritoneal dialysis, and these two are:

  • Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) – This process includes connecting a new bag of fluid, draining out the old fluid, and putting the new fluid in. This can be done for about 30 minutes and almost anywhere with a few sensible precautions. After between exchanges, the person is free to go about their daily activities.
  • Automated Peritoneal Dialysis (APD) – There is a machine called a cycler that does the exchanges. The catheter attached to the tubing of the cycler, put each night. APD is done every night and can usually take between 8 to 10 hours. During the day, dialysate is usually left in the patient’s body so that the process of dialysis can continue.

Haemodialysis

This type of dialysis involves making a circuit where blood is pumped from your bloodstream to a machine. This process makes your blood clean by collecting waste from it and washing the abdomen’s space. This is an ongoing dialysis being done 3 to 5 times a week, and it takes about four to five hours every session.

Factors in Choosing Kidney Transplant or Dialysis

Whether it is Kidney Transplant or Dialysis you choose for your situation of your kidney, the choice may be influenced by several factors including:

  • Personal Preference
  • How far has the damage been done to your kidney
  • Health Professionals recommendations
