Boxer Mike Tyson, who was 42 to 1 favorite to win, was knocked out for the first time in his professional career in the early afternoon at the Tokyo Dome.

With a 37-0 record and the title of undisputed heavyweight, Tyson started his downfall at the hands of the underdog James “Buster” Douglas, a skilled fighter who criticize for “lacking heart” throughout his career. The sporting community was shock, especially those watching Catskill, the small Hudson River town where Tyson first learn his craft. It was inconceivable that “Iron Mike” would be defeated in his prime by anyone, much less a journeyman; at the time, 29 of Tyson’s victories hadn’t even gone past the fifth round.

Buster

The man on the planet” being out by Buster continues to rank among the biggest upsets in both sports and boxing history. The match always provided a “do you remember where you were” moment for fight fans of a particular vintage, I do. I was inside the Central Park Athletic Club.  A sports and arts venue constructed in the heyday of downtown Milwaukee, with a friend from college.

The rundown establishment was known for its unkempt bar, which had a big screen, an HBO subscription, and a relaxed policy regarding the sale of beer to Marquette University first-year students. Other than this trending topic, art of zoo is also a top trend on social media these days.

In January 1986, he was the Sports Illustrate cover boy.

When he defeated World Boxing Council champion Trevor Berbick in the second round via technical knockout. Tyson improved to 28-0 and established himself as the sport’s youngest heavyweight champion. In those days, Tyson routinely destroyed his opponents with effective brutality that was impossible to look away from.

Layden

Layden also worked for Sports Illustrated for 25 years, where he published an essay in 2015 that reflected on the upheaval and turmoil of the early Tyson years.

Not like it is now, but boxing was beginning to lose popularity in the 1980s. Mike arrived and gave it a significant boost, according to Layden. A boxing analyst from that era is fill in the SI story as saying that while Mike wasn’t a great technician. The speed and power were so incredible that you didn’t want to miss it. Those were enjoyable times.

Mika

“Mike Tyson has been a transparent figure for the past 30 years, but in the middle of the 1980s. He never used humor or irony. But whenever he wanted to sit down and talk.  We would have stimulating intellectual exchanges, usually about the boxing history he so fervently admires.
