Most of these lakes are natural lakes, however there are a few which are man-made too. There are over 278 lakes in Karnataka, of which around 106 are in Bengaluru. It’s no surprise why Bangalore, the capital city of Karnataka is called the City of lakes. Most of the lakes and rivers in Karnataka are well maintained as they are vital for the tourism industry. People being a little more concerned about their health look for uncrowded and refreshing getaways. Lately the lakes of Karnataka have become a perfect one-stop location for families looking to spend quality time. Hirekolale Lake, Chikmagalur
Hirekolale Lake is a manmade lake situated amidst the huge mountain ranges which is just 10 km from Chikmagalur and 50 km from Kemmangundi. This beautiful lake is one of the well-known tourist places in Chikmagalur because of its mind-stirring picture perfect postcard setting. The most fascinating views are during the sunset when the saffron color of the sun rays reflects on the mountains thereby making the place appear magical. Initially this lake was built to supply water to the town of Chikmagalur and assist in the irrigation but today it is a perfect getaway to unwind away from the busy city life.
Ulsoor Lake, Bangalore
Ulsoor Lake also known as Halasuru Lake is one of the oldest and most popular lakes in Bangalore. Spread across over 1.5 sq. km, this lake is located in the heart of the city. It got its name ‘Halasuru’, a Kannada name for jackfruit, as there was a jackfruit orchard close to the lake. During British rule, it was called ‘Ulsoor’, but in 2004, the lake was officially renamed ‘Halasuru’. It is a one-stop destination for nature lovers, joggers, walkers, bird watchers, photographers, kids and senior citizens. It is renowned for its numerous temples and many multi-cuisine eating joints that makes this place a very happening location.
Pampa Sarovar Lake, Hampi
The Pampa Sarovar Lake is located to the south of the great Tungabhadra River in Koppal district near Hampi in Karnataka. This lake is considered sacred by Hindus as it is the place where Pampa, a form of Shiva’s consort Parvati, performed penance to please Lord Shiva. It is also the place where Shabari, a devotee of Rama, waited for the arrival of Ram in the epic Ramayana. Due to this there is always a heavy flow of pilgrims in this area. There is a Lakshmi temple, Shiva temple and a small Ganesh Shrine in close vicinity. The lake is filled with lotuses which look most stunning when they are in full bloom.
Pilikula Lake, Mangalore
Pilikula Lake is a serene water body located within the “Pilikula NisargaDhama”, an eco-educational tourist park. It is just 12 km from the town of Mangalore. This lake was once a large water body that served as the source of water for the animals living in this area. It is believed that in the olden times several tigers would come to this lake to drink water, hence the name ‘Pilikula Lake’ which means Tiger’s lake. However, with time the water in the lake got polluted and the huge lake shrank to become a small pond. This is when the Government authorities took matter into their hands and started preservation and restoration of the lake. Today it is back to its original glory and is frequented by people of all age groups.
Unkal Lake, Hubli
Unkal Lake, located at a distance of 6 km from Hubli is considered to be more than 110 years old. Spread over nearly 200 acres this lake offers spectacular views of sunrise and sunset. The main attraction here is the statue of Swami Vivekananda that adorns the center of the lake. This picturesque water body is surrounded by a lush green garden that adds to the scenic view. People specially come here in the evening to enjoy boating in the serene waters of the lake and spend a quiet evening to rejuvenate. Unkal Lake is a major source of water supply for the twin cities of Hubli & Dharwad.
Kukkarahalli Lake, Mysore
One of the most popular lakes in Mysore is the Kukkarahalli Lake which is located in the heart of the city. This manmade lake was designed and built in the year 1864 by Poornaiah the then dewan, during the rule of Krishnaraja Wodeyar. It was built to provide water for irrigation for land outside the city. Bird watches will love this place as about 176 species of migratory birds visit the lake during winter to roost.
The lake was also a source of water supply to the city of Mysore for many years until sewage and excessive land encroachments blockage of water flow sources led to the eutrophication of the lake. Due to this the number of birds visiting the lake has substantially decreased. The government now has taken several measures to restore the lake.
