5 Tips for Grilling in the Winter

Grilling is one of the best ways to put incredible flavor into your food.  Unfortunately, many people treat it like a winter sport even though it’s something that should be enjoyed year-round!

These are the top five tips for anyone grilling in the winter and why this season changes everything.

Get a Grill That Can Handle the Cold.

One thing any propane supplier will tell you is that propane can handle temperatures down to negative 40 degrees Fahrenheit!  Although most people wouldn’t be comfortable standing outside at that temperature (it’s so cold that Fahrenheit and Celsius flip for which number is warmer), it’s generally not a good idea to try and grill in this temperature.

The main problem comes from the tanks themselves.  Propane tanks are made of metal, have glue on them for the labels, and some have plastic parts on the valve, and all of this can become a little easier to crack or break when the temperatures drop.

If you live in a very northern area and you know your temperatures get that low, bring your propane tank into your garage or home and set it somewhere that’s at least above freezing.

Winterize Your Grill.

Winterizing your grill is a lot easier than you think!  To do this, you’ll coat your grill grates in a thin layer of cooking oil, the same way you would when seasoning them.  If you’re expecting to have your grill turned off for many months, take the time to plastic wrap your burners.  You can also set plastic bags tightly over them.

The best thing you can do for your grill if it’s mobile is to take it into your garage, house, or shed, anywhere above-freezing temperatures where it won’t take up too much space.  This will save you from a lot of trouble in the summer.

Wear Warm and Protective Clothing.

Protect your body!  If you’re grilling in the winter, and you know your grill is at risk, then your body may be at risk too!  Take the time to wear warm and protective clothing, and keep your neck, head, and extremities warm before everything else.  Wearing a thick coat and hat is good, but I don’t think the grill will keep your hands warm enough to be safe. 

Be Patient: as it Preheats.

Let your grill fully preheat!  We all get a little impatient when grilling in the cold. This is a natural part of this process.  Instead of letting your meat lose a lot of flavor by going without a sear, preheat your oven, so it stays toasty!

Don’t Open the Lid Once it Started.

Once you’ve started grilling: don’t open your grill!  You lose a lot more heat than you may think when you open it, so it’s important to trust the process and keep it closed for as long as possible.  This will protect you from having to deal with a surprisingly long cooking time.
