IIMs are reputed colleges listed under the institutions having national importance. There are 20 IIMs in India and getting admission into any of them is not easy. Every year around 2 lakh MBA aspirants apply to the programmes of their choice to an IIM and this makes this institute highly competitive. Besides, there are some prerequisites that you have to fulfill. Let’s take a look at those.
CAT/GMAT scores – Securing a good score in the CAT/GMAT entrance examinations is the first step towards getting admission into an IIM. You have to achieve the minimum prescribed percentile to be eligible for the courses there. Some of the IIMs also accept GRE scores. However, if you have taken the GRE, but are planning to appear for the GMAT exam, you can use the GMAT GRE conversion tool to check your possible performance in GMAT using the GRE scores.
Academic Qualification – To be eligible for an MBA from IIM, you should have a bachelor’s degree in any discipline with at least 50% marks (or equivalent CGPA). If you are from SC/ST/PwD category, the required percentage of marks is 45%.
Grades – If your graduation scores are in the form of grades or GPA and not marks, your eligibility would be based upon the grade to mark conversion system followed by the university from which you graduated. However, during the time of admission, you must submit a written statement from the head or director of your university to certify this.
Age Limit – There is no defined IIM age limit for MBA admission. Anyone, regardless of their age can appear for the test and get admission to IIM.
You are eligible to apply for the course even if you are a final year graduate student or awaiting the last year graduation results. However, in such cases, you are required to submit a written proof from your principal/head of the department or institution/university stating you are appearing for the final year exam or awaiting results and have achieved 50% marks or equivalent in the last semester. However, the IIM admissions are not solely based on the aforementioned criteria. The final selection of candidates are made based on your final composite score which includes – Writing Ability Test score, CAT/GMAT score, Personal Interview score, past academic performance and work experience.
IIM is the dream school of most Indian MBA aspirants, hence, the competition is really high. So, if you wish to pursue an MBA from IIM, you have to have an excellent study strategy to prepare thoroughly for the IIM entrance exams.
